Mike and Elizabeth King:  World Horizons, Phnom Pemh Cambodia

Michael attended the Young People's Fellowship at RLBC in the 1980s; Elizabeth worshiped at RLBC whilst studying for an MA in London much more recently.

We joined World Horizons and have been based in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, since early 1994. Our focus has been on discipling individuals in the workplace and on providing professional development.

ELIZABETH:

My focus has remained in providing in-service teacher training to teachers in the Cambodian government state school system. I also continue my work with those teachers in the accelerated learning programme that take children who need to catch up through 6 grades of schooling in 3 years.

I have continued to carry out educational consultancy work to a number of NGOs. I serve on the board of a small Christian education organisation.

Over the past couple of years I have found my vision for the development of education here extending. I believe there is scope to get more involved with shaping the education system in Cambodia and in particular in developing policy on how teachers are trained.

MICHAEL

For the last few years my main focus has been the running of a website development business. I also provide loose oversight of a floor tile export project, am an advisor to the Jars of Clay restaurant which provides training and employment opportunities to young women and am an occasional contributor to a training course for young entrepreneurs.

These and other activities have given  context to walk closely with a number of young Christian men and women as we’ve pursued vision for businesses or other ventures. In the process of facing the inevitable joys and struggles we learn together something of what it means to work in a way that acknowledges and honours the Lord.

At the time of writing this update, Oct 2010, I’m facing changes. For the website development business to succeed longer term both commercially and as means of discipling people, we probably need to amalgamate with a similar business and we’re currently looking closely at one option for this.

As Cambodia changes, initiatives like the tile project need to evolve, change focus or maybe conclude. I’m aware of needing to understand afresh what God is doing in Cambodia and to understand my part in it.

Please pray for:

Elizabeth:

Ongoing growth in the training teachers programmes
Teachers and students alike to see God behind the faithful work that Elizabeth is doing
Opportunities for Elizabeth to speak one on one of her faith in Jesus
Wisdom & direction on whether & how to pursue a PhD

Michael:

For the success of the various entrepreneurial endeavours Michael is involved in – web  design; Jars of Clay; Tile project
For depth of relationship building that enable others to see Jesus in Michael
For another website development business to amalgamate his business with
For sensitivity to the way Cambodia is changing and how best to respond to the changing   times.
Ongoing refreshing in understanding the part Michael is to play in God’s plan in an ever changing Cambodia
